In a bold initiative, Balbek Bureau's RE:Ukraine Villages project is working to preserve Ukraine's rural architecture and cultural heritage. This project, which has partnered with the Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture (KNUCA), is utilising digital tools and academic partnerships to document and visualise the architectural and cultural landscapes of Ukrainian villages.

The RE:Ukraine Villages project is innovative in its approach, integrating digital mapping, 3D modelling, and archival research to systematically record and safeguard the vernacular architecture and traditional village structures that are at risk from modernisation and conflict. This effort aims not only to preserve physical heritage but also to promote awareness and support sustainable regeneration of Ukraine’s rural cultural landscapes, which face threats from war and rapid change.

One of the key aspects of the project is the capture of detailed data about historical buildings, spatial layouts, and cultural artifacts in rural communities. This data is preserved in digital form, providing a valuable resource for future generations. The academic partnerships contribute expert analysis and contextualization of the cultural significance of these rural environments, ensuring that the preservation effort is grounded in scholarly research and cultural sensitivity.

The project has also benefited from the contributions of volunteers who have travelled around Ukraine and used online tools such as Google Maps to research the unique material culture of Ukrainian rural architecture. Photographs for this context have been provided by the Old Khata project, a documentary project about Ukrainian rural architecture.

The RE:Ukraine Villages project is an extension of Balbek Bureau's ongoing social initiatives under the flagship RE:Ukraine since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. With a lack of prior written knowledge on village houses in Ukraine, the preservation of these structures is crucial to prevent their potential loss due to shelling.

Students at KNUCA are actively involved in the project, designing 3D models of rural houses (khatas) and settlements. This opportunity offers them a unique chance to contribute to the preservation of Ukraine's cultural heritage.

In conclusion, the RE:Ukraine Villages project is making significant strides in preserving Ukraine's rural architectural heritage amidst ongoing conflict. By combining cutting-edge digital documentation with interdisciplinary academic inputs, the project is ensuring that the unique architectural heritage of Ukraine's rural areas is not lost to the ravages of war and modernisation.

The RE:Ukraine Villages project is utilizing Google Maps, along with other digital tools, to facilitate research on Ukrainian rural architecture by volunteers. To enhance the preservation effort, the project collaborates with the Old Khata project for photographs. The project also uses AI-based techniques such as 3D modelling and digital mapping to systematically record and safeguard traditional village structures, demonstrating innovation in technology for cultural heritage conservation.
