Radio Waves in the Modern Russian Landscape

Data Transition: From Physical to Virtual - Air Gets Connected Online

The pulse of radio transmission in Russia resonates at an impressive pace. Statistical data from Mediascope reveals that a staggering 85% of Russians aged 12 and up tuned into their favorite stations at least once a month in Q1 2025, with an average daily reach of 51% of the nation. This figure surpasses the 79% initiated in 2023, with the average person dedicating 1 hour and 55 minutes each day to radio.

Roadways are sprinkled with the sound of radio voices as 71% of the audience prefers listening to their cars' speakers. Home and workplace traditionally serve as secondary avenues (30% via classic receivers), edging out mobile devices (28%) as the third preferred means of tuning in. The growing trend of online radio listening has seen a surge in growth from a 2.6% share in 2016 to an impressive 10.5% in the first half of 2024.

The vibrant radio landscape caters to the growing advertising market, with a 28% yearly growth in 2024, reaching 17.5 billion rubles. Under this burgeoning umbrella, audio advertising storms its way to prominence, spurred by an expanding online presence.

Wave of Yesteryears: Radio Day's Origins

The momentous dawn of radio day was declared by the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR on May 2, 1945, marking the 50th anniversary of radio's birth by inventor Popov. However, the October 12, 1924, initiation of systematic domestic broadcasting by the Bureau for the Promotion of Radio Amateurs in Moscow City Council holds more historical weight.

The Charms of Radio: Whom Do We Listen To?

Mediascope end-of-year data from 2024 revealed the most listened-to station, "Avtoradio," with 7.45 million daily listeners and 19.5 million weekly listeners. The runner-ups are "Road Radio," "Europe Plus," "Russian Radio," and "Retro FM."

Strangely, the audience numbers for these major stations dwindled over the years. "Avtoradio" experienced a slight drop, from 7.9 million daily listeners in July-December 2023 to 7.5 million in the same period in 2024. The erstwhile ratings leader, "The Road Radio," saw a more pronounced decline from nearly 8 million in the last half of 2023 to 7.3 million in the second half of 2024. "Europa Plus" fell from second to third place, reducing its reach from 7.9 million per day to 7.3 million daily listeners.

The "Expert" magazine in collaboration with "Mediology" unveiled the most frequently cited radio stations in 2025. They include Sputnik, "Komsomolskaya Pravda" radio, "Govorit Moskva," Business FM, and "Mayak" radio.

In the final months of 2024, OnAir.ru shed light on various trends shaping the Russian broadcasting scene. Among them, the development of internet radio and the proliferation of podcasts emerged as key players. The transition of radio stations to social networks allowed for rapid feedback, content promotion, and increased reach by utilizing interactive features such as polls and votes.

To maintain a foothold in the competitive market, traditional radio stations turned to new platforms like mobile apps and smartphones to deliver content and enhance the listener experience. With heightened competition from streaming services, online radio stations introduced paid subscriptions for exclusive content.

The representatives from RGM, "National Media Group," "Gazprom-Media," and VGTRK were reached out to by "Expert" magazine for comment but did not respond by publication time.
