Cyberattack Exposes Brisbane Motorists to Pornographic Billboard

Brisbane-based billboard advertising company Goa has been targeted in a cyberattack, with hackers displaying inappropriate pornographic content on a digital billboard at Milton Road for three and a half minutes on November 20, 2022. The incident was reported to Queensland Police, who are currently investigating.

The targeted billboard, located at 315 Milton Road, directly faces outbound traffic and is close to Suncorp Stadium. The explicit content was viewable to passing motorists, raising concerns about public exposure to such material. Goa has confirmed that they had not received any prior warnings or threats before the attack.

Cyberattacks on billboards and digital displays, while relatively unusual in Australia, have occurred elsewhere, particularly in North America. In a similar incident in September 2022, a digital touchscreen kiosk at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City was compromised and displayed pornography for two days.

Queensland Police have confirmed receiving a complaint from Goa and are treating the incident seriously. They have been provided with CCTV footage of individuals who may be involved. Goa's Managing Director, Chris Tyquin, has expressed hope that arrests will be made in the case. The company is cooperating fully with the investigation.
