In the rapidly evolving world of electric vehicles (EVs), China's market is experiencing a significant shift, with domestic brands asserting their dominance. According to recent reports, **BYD** has taken the lead with a 28.9% market share, followed closely by Geely (13.1%), Changan, SAIC, and Tesla, which is seeing a decline in its 4.6% market share[1][2][3].

The top-selling models in China are the **Geely Geome Xingyuan**, the BYD Qin Plus (both BEV and PHEV versions), and the Wuling Mini EV[3][4]. Other notable competitors in the market include Xpeng, Leapmotor, NIO, Zeekr, and Xiaomi, all vying for dominance in China’s largest EV market.

The Chinese EV market registered a 43.2% year-on-year increase in the first quarter of 2025, with nearly 2.63 million EVs sold[5]. BYD, in particular, saw a 36.4% year-on-year increase, while Geely's strong BEV performance propelled it to second place[6].

Meanwhile, across the Pacific, the status of EV imports to the US remains unclear. The US Court of International Trade ruled that US President Donald Trump had exceeded his authority by imposing certain tariffs, but this ruling did not apply to the 25% tariff on vehicles[7]. As of 2025, no updated information on current tariff policies for EV imports from China or other countries was found[1][2][3]. Given the rapid rise of Chinese EV manufacturers on the global stage, any changes to tariffs would be closely watched, but no recent confirmed update is available.

In Europe, Skoda presented an updated electrified version of its Favorit model, and Alpine unveiled its all-electric five-seater sport fastback, the A390, available from Q4 2022[8]. Xiaomi announced its YU7 SUV will be available for purchase in July, competing with the Tesla Model Y[9]. Volkswagen Group (VW) is reportedly holding 'fair' and 'constructive' talks with the US government[10].

The European Council has given final approval to CO2 emission target amendments, giving vehicle makers more flexibility to meet an average threshold across 2025, 2026, and 2027[11]. The CO2 emission regulation is set to enter into force on the 20th day following its publication in the Official Journal.

As the EV market continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how these developments unfold, particularly in relation to tariffs on EV imports to the US and the continued growth of Chinese brands in the global market.
