AngloGold Ashanti's Obuasi Mine Reinforces Commitment to Community Health Through Mini-Clinic Durbar

In a bid to reinforce its socio-economic development plan, AngloGold Ashanti's Obuasi Mine held a health outreach for the residents of Nhyieso and surrounding communities within the Obuasi municipality. Approximately one thousand people, including traditional leaders, underwent health screenings and received medications for various conditions.

Medical personnel from the Obuasi Municipal and East Health Directorate set up various stations catering to eye clinics, consultations, Covid-19 and Hepatitis B vaccination posts, and a dental clinic provided by the Otumfuo Smile Foundation.

In his opening address, George Owusu Ansah, Senior Manager for Environment at AngloGold Ashanti, emphasized the company's dedication to prioritizing health and safety. He stated, "We believe our business is people, and people are our business. We place people first, giving the highest priority to their health."

Since its decision in 2015 to transition the mine's hospital into the AGA Health Foundation, AngloGold Ashanti has endeavored to improve access to quality healthcare in Obuasi. The foundation currently serves not only mine employees and their dependents but also the wider community, with over 70% of its outpatient attendance originating from host communities.

Significant strides have been made in addressing malaria, with the Malaria Control Programme emerging as a flagship health initiative and yielding substantive socio-economic impacts. To boost maternal and child health, the mine collaborated with the Obuasi Government Hospital by donating a fully equipped 16-bed maternity block with an operating theatre last year.

In line with its 10-year SEDP, AngloGold Ashanti will continue to carry out similar health outreaches in various communities. The initiative aims at reducing health disparities, improving access to care, and fostering sustainable growth in Obuasi and its neighboring districts.
