Chinese surveillance under scrutiny as India tests Akash Prime air defense system in Ladakh region
In a significant leap for India's defense capabilities, the Akash Prime air defense system has proven its worth in challenging environments, demonstrating impressive performance during trials and operational use. This advanced system, a significant upgrade from the original Akash, is set to bolster the Indian Army and Air Force's defenses.
During the trials in the Ladakh sector, the Akash Prime system showcased its ability to operate effectively at high altitudes, up to 4,500 metres, and in low-temperature environments, a critical requirement for deployment in mountainous border regions like Ladakh. The system's modified ground system and missile were designed to maintain reliability and performance under such harsh weather conditions.
One of the key advancements in the Akash Prime is the incorporation of an indigenous active Radio Frequency (RF) seeker. This technology provides the system with a 360° engagement capability and significantly improves accuracy in target detection and interception. The RF seeker allows the missile to autonomously track and engage moving targets with greater precision.
The Akash Prime also boasts an increased operational range and ceiling. It can engage targets within a distance of about 25-30 kilometres and has a flight ceiling of up to 18 kilometres, improving its engagement envelope against enemy aircraft, drones, and missiles compared to the original system.
The system's mobility has also been enhanced, with a reduced footprint making it easier to deploy in diverse terrains. This improvement, coupled with its proven combat effectiveness, makes the Akash Prime a formidable medium-range air defense system suitable for challenging environments like high-altitude border areas.
The Akash Prime's indigenization level currently stands at 82%, a figure targeted to rise to 93%. This high degree of indigenization supports India's push for self-reliant defense manufacturing, as part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
The Akash Prime system has already formed the third and fourth regiments of the Akash air defense systems in the Indian Army. Its battle-proven capabilities, demonstrated during successful trials and operational use, including the thwarting of aerial attacks during Operation Sindoor, continue to boost the confidence of the Indian military.
As India continues to strengthen its defense capabilities, the Akash Prime system stands as a testament to the country's progress in indigenous defense technology and its commitment to self-reliance.
