China Launches New K Visa for Foreign Scientists and Tech Talents
China has launched a new K visa programme, designed to simplify immigration for foreign scientists and technologists. Announced in mid-August and launched on September 19, 2025, this move is seen as a response to some countries, like the US, retracting their international talent policies.
Unlike other visa categories, the K visa does not require a domestic employer or entity to issue an invitation. It is intended for 'young foreign scientific and technological talents', although the exact age, educational background, and work experience requirements are yet to be clarified.
The K visa aims to provide more convenience, with increased permitted entries, validity period, and duration of stay compared to other visa types. Holders can engage in exchanges and my activity in fields such as education, culture, science and technology, as well as entrepreneurial and business activities.
The People's Daily has dismissed 'strange rumours' about the K visa causing 'immigration problems' in China.
The K visa is China's latest effort to attract international talent in science and technology. While the specifics of the programme are still being clarified, it promises a simplified immigration process and more flexibility for eligible foreign professionals.
