ChatGPT's User Base: Young, Female, and Global

A recent study by OpenAI and Harvard economist David Deming has shed light on the evolving landscape of ChatGPT usage. The report, based on an analysis of 1.5 million conversations, reveals intriguing trends in user demographics and behaviour.

The study found that ChatGPT's user base is predominantly young, with nearly half of all conversations coming from individuals aged 18 to 25. This age group has been driving the platform's growth since its launch. Additionally, the gender gap among users is narrowing, with women now making up about 52% of the user base, up from 37% in January 2024.

Most users interact with ChatGPT for everyday tasks. A staggering 74% of chats are about writing, seeking information, or practical guidance. This mirrors the integration of Google into daily life since the mid-2000s. Writing is particularly popular among professionals, making it the top use case for ChatGPT in the workplace. Decision support is another key way users engage with the platform.

The study also highlights the global spread of ChatGPT. While usage growth in poorer countries is four times faster than in wealthy nations, the technology is democratising, with users in low-income countries increasingly adopting it.

In summary, ChatGPT's user base is young, with a slight majority being women. The platform is integral to everyday life, with most users seeking practical guidance and information. Its global adoption is accelerating, particularly in low-income countries, indicating a narrowing digital divide. As ChatGPT continues to evolve, its role in our daily lives and workplaces is set to grow.
