ChatGPT Introduces Instant Checkout, Revolutionizing Online Shopping
Users can now shop directly within conversations, thanks to the Agentic Commerce Protocol, an open standard co-developed by Stripe and OpenAI. This new feature, called Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, is currently available to U.S. users and supports over a million Shopify merchants, with Etsy sellers already on board.
The Agentic Commerce Protocol enables AI agents to interact with merchant backends, allowing users to complete transactions without leaving the conversation. Only necessary order data is shared with sellers, ensuring minimal disruption to existing merchant processes. Security measures include user confirmation at each purchase step and encrypted payment tokens.
The protocol is open-sourced to encourage wider adoption. It was publicly announced on September 17, 2025, with partners including Ant International, Mesh, Mysten Labs, and Nexi. Product rankings in ChatGPT remain organic and unsponsored, preserving user trust.
Instant Checkout in ChatGPT brings a seamless shopping experience to users, while keeping merchants' existing systems intact. With the Agentic Commerce Protocol open-sourced, we can expect more platforms to adopt this convenient feature, transforming the way we shop and interact online.
