CF Industries Ships First Low-Carbon Ammonia from Louisiana Facility

CF Industries has shipped its first load of low-carbon ammonia from its Donaldsonville, Louisiana facility. This marks a significant step towards reducing emissions in the chemical industry.

The shipment, weighing 23,500 metric tonnes, is bound for Antwerp, Belgium. There, it will be used by Envalior in the production of low-carbon caprolactam. This is a key milestone in the decarbonisation of the chemical industry, as ammonia production is one of the world's most emissions-intensive processes. CF Industries' Donaldsonville facility has been producing low-carbon ammonia since July, using a carbon capture plant that can sequester up to two million metric tonnes of CO2 per year. The company expects to produce approximately 1.9 million tonnes of ammonia per year from the site, verified under the Verified Ammonia Carbon Intensity programme. CF Industries and Trafigura are working together to develop a low-carbon ammonia supply chain in advance of the EU's carbon border adjustment mechanism. The Haber-Bosch process, the main method of ammonia production, combines hydrogen with nitrogen. Companies are exploring green ammonia production to fully decarbonise its production, despite challenges such as high production costs and infrastructure gaps.

CF Industries' first shipment of low-carbon ammonia from Donaldsonville is a significant achievement in the drive towards a lower-carbon future. The use of this ammonia in Envalior's production of low-carbon caprolactam further demonstrates the potential of this technology in reducing emissions in the chemical industry.
