Capcom successfully navigates out of Steam's sea of unfavorable reviews, as ratings for Monster Hunter Rise escalate to 20% positive

Monster Hunter Wilds, the PC port of Monster Hunter Rise, has been met with a mix of criticism and frustration since its launch earlier this year. Despite various patches, many performance-related problems persist, causing concern among players and impacting the game's overall reception.

The game's performance issues are primarily attributed to DirectStorage-related CPU bottlenecking, a fundamental flaw in how the game utilizes the CPU. This problem was noted as early as prerelease benchmarking in February 2025.

Despite multiple patches since launch, including the recent 1.021 update in August 2025, the core performance issues have not been resolved. Players continue to experience texture streaming problems, frequent frame drops, input delays, crashes, and connection errors.

Capcom has acknowledged the CPU usage problem as deep-rooted and has planned for multiple staged fixes, with the first significant patch scheduled for winter 2025. This timeline suggests a nearly year-long wait for meaningful improvement.

In addition to CPU bottlenecks, the game demands at least 12GB of VRAM for stable 60fps performance, which many players do not have, contributing to poor frame rates and instability. Other reported causes of crashes include faulty graphics drivers, corrupted cache files, incompatible mods, and overclocking issues.

Despite these ongoing technical problems, Capcom has focused more on adding new content—such as new difficulty tiers, monsters, and weapon buffs—rather than fixing performance. Over 100 bug fixes were introduced in mid-2025, but these did not significantly alleviate the major performance problems.

As a result, Monster Hunter Wilds has moved from "Overwhelmingly Negative" to "Mostly Negative" reviews on Steam. The recent reception of the game on Steam is still "Mostly Negative," with the Steam page receiving negative reviews, particularly regarding the game's performance on PC.

One player reported that the game starts up fine but the screen is completely black during cutscenes on PC. Despite the increasing positive reviews, ongoing issues on PC make it difficult to ignore.

Despite the challenges, one fan describes Monster Hunter Wilds as a game that can easily consume hundreds of hours. Another player expresses that Monster Hunter Wilds deserves better reviews. However, the fan's positive comment about Monster Hunter Wilds is contingent on the game running properly on the PC.

With upcoming updates expected to patch out more of the port's problems, the goal is for the updates to potentially bring the reviews for Monster Hunter Wilds to "Mixed" or "Positive." Meanwhile, there are other exciting new games to keep an eye on this year and beyond.

In the meantime, some players suggest playing Monster Hunter World instead of Monster Hunter Wilds, given the former's more stable performance. As Capcom works to address the issues with Monster Hunter Wilds, players continue to express their hope for a smoother, more enjoyable experience.
