Canon intends to boost manufacturing of stylish, compact cameras, yet another potential price surge due to tariffs is looming on the horizon

In the ever-evolving landscape of the camera industry, Digital Camera World's US division brings you the latest updates on Canon's strategic moves and the impact of tariffs. Hillary K. Grigonis, our seasoned camera and technology expert, leads the coverage.

Despite an overall growth of 6.5 percent in the second quarter of 2025 for Canon's imaging division, the company's net sales declined by 2.4 percent compared to the same period last year. This discrepancy can be attributed to the specific second quarter of this year, as the first half of 2025 saw a surge in demand for cameras, contributing to the overall growth.

In response to renewed demand for photography-focused compact cameras, Canon is ramping up production of its premium "G" series PowerShot compact cameras. This move comes after the discontinuation of several previous models, such as the PowerShot SX740 HS.

However, the tariffs on Japanese imports have had a significant impact on Canon's pricing strategy. The company has already increased the price of several cameras and lenses in the US, with the EOS R1's price increasing by about 7.9 percent under the ten percent tariff pause. Furthermore, Canon has indicated that another price increase could be forthcoming, following industry-wide adjustments by competitors like Nikon.

The new 15 percent tariff on Japanese imports, which wasn't announced in time to be part of Canon's forecast for the remainder of the year, is expected to further increase pricing for Canon products, potentially leading to a decrease in sales volume.

In an effort to mitigate these costs, Canon plans to increase production of the new PowerShot V series model and conventional compact models where supply is not keeping up with demand. The company also aims to expand sales of the new EOS R50 V.

Notably, the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III, PowerShot G7 X Mark II, and PowerShot SX740 HS, three compact cameras that have long been listed as out of stock on Canon's US website, are part of the lineup set for increased production.

Canon is also reviewing its production strategies in the wake of the tariffs, budgeting for 20 billion yen in expenses, mainly to be incurred in the second half of the year. The company attributes some of its success to the newly launched EOS R5 Mark II, as well as the "favorable reception" for the PowerShot V1 and EOS R50 V.

The resurgence in popularity of Canon's G7X series can be linked to social media trends and the more flattering 24-100mm equivalent lens compared to smartphone optics.
