BYD introduces the Sealion 6 DM-i hybrid SUV in Singapore, marking the debut of a new hybrid vehicle.
BYD Makes a Splash in Singapore with First Hybrid Model
Chinese automotive giant BYD has made waves in Singapore, selling the highest number of vehicles in the city-state in 2024, according to data from the Singapore Land Transport Authority. The automaker's success is evident in the sales of its Sealion 6 DM-i hybrid model, which marks BYD's first foray into the hybrid market in Singapore.
In June 2022, BYD sold 90,049 vehicles overseas, marking the seventh consecutive month of record-breaking sales. The month-on-month increase was a modest 1.13%, but the year-on-year increase was a significant 233.58%. By the end of June, BYD Group had sold 382,585 New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) worldwide, a 11.98% increase year-on-year.
The Sealion 6 DM-i, known as the Song Plus DM-i in China, has a starting price of S$212,888 ($166,140) including the Guaranteed COE (Certificate of Entitlement). This price is a stark contrast to the model's price in China, where it retails for RMB 135,800 ($18,940). The significant price difference is primarily due to Singapore's unique vehicle pricing and taxation system.
Singapore is one of the most expensive regions in the world for vehicle ownership, with the COE being a major contributing factor. The COE is a mandatory permit to own and operate a vehicle in Singapore, which can be very costly and is included in the vehicle’s price. Other factors include additional registration fees and taxes, import and compliance costs, and market positioning and warranty offers.
Despite the high prices, BYD has managed to gain a foothold in the Singapore market. In addition to the Sealion 6 DM-i, BYD currently offers the Seal, Dolphin, Sealion 7, M6, and Atto 3 in Singapore. The Atto 3 was launched in July 2022, marking BYD's entry into the local passenger vehicle market.
BYD's success in Singapore is a testament to its expanding market reach. The company is introducing solutions that address a broader range of driving needs, positioning itself as a key player in the global automotive industry. With its commitment to innovation and sustainability, BYD is set to continue making waves in the years to come.
