Bremen City Cleans Up with New Electric Fleet: Eleon, eSwingo, Flux, and Volvo Electric Vehicles Introduced

In the heart of northwestern Germany, Bremen city is making significant strides towards a greener future. The city's waste management department, Bremen Street Cleaning and Waste Collection, has recently introduced four new electric vehicles as part of its broader strategy to reduce diesel consumption and achieve climate neutrality by 2038.

The electrification of the fleet is an important step in this ambitious plan. The department's vehicles, which number around 260, contribute a substantial portion of their emissions to the transportation sector. In 2023 alone, the fleet consumed approximately 1.3 million liters of diesel.

The four new additions to the fleet—Eleon, eSwingo 200+, Flux, and Volvo Electric—are quieter, cleaner, and more efficient. They do not emit pollutants or greenhouse gases into the city air, significantly reducing urban air pollution and contributing directly to Bremen’s climate targets.

The transition from diesel to electric vehicles is being supported by both governmental and innovative project frameworks. Funding for the purchase of electric vehicles is being provided through grants, with the larger waste vehicle partially funded by the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport as part of the KsNI directive to promote climate-friendly commercial vehicles.

Smaller waste collection vehicles and sweepers were financed from funds of the Bremen Climate Action Plan. The HY.City.Bremerhaven hydrogen project, which received around €5.5 million from the German Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport, serves as a model for such funding opportunities.

Senator Kathrin Moosdorf, responsible for Environment, Climate, and Science, inspected the new electric vehicles on the Bremen Market Square on November 11th. She stated that these electric vehicles are an important contribution to both city cleanliness and climate protection. Daniela Enslein, a member of the Bremen Waste Management board and manager of Waste Logistics Bremen and Street Cleaning Bremen, emphasised that electrifying the fleet is a key component of their efforts towards climate neutrality.

The gradual switch of the Bremen Waste Management fleet to electric vehicles is expected to significantly reduce diesel consumption in the coming years. This shift is not only beneficial for the environment but also for the city's residents, who will experience quieter, cleaner streets as a result. Bremen's waste management department is truly leading the way in demonstrating how sustainable transport can contribute to a greener, more livable city.

These electric vehicles, namely Eleon, eSwingo 200+, Flux, and Volvo Electric, are significant contributions to Bremen's climate targets and city cleanliness, as they do not emit pollutants or greenhouse gases, thus reducing urban air pollution. The electrification of the fleet, which includes approximately 260 vehicles, is powered by funding from grants and the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport, as well as the Bremen Climate Action Plan.
