Breaking free from the 16-step grid could potentially be achieved by Lambda Synthetics' PolyPulse instrument, though its aesthetics might not be everyone's cup of tea.
The PolyPulse by Lambda Synthetics is a groundbreaking groovebox and algorithmic performance workstation, designed to push the boundaries of traditional music production and live performance.
Launched in 2023 at the Superbooth trade show, the PolyPulse stands out as a powerful, flexible instrument, offering deep algorithmic rhythmic programming combined with diverse sound engines and effects. It is now available to order for UK/EU customers at Thomann, and for US customers at Perfect Circuit.
The PolyPulse features five tracks, each with an algorithmic sequencer, polyphonic sound engine, audio effects chain, and a dedicated XY touchpad for performance control. The sequencer treats rhythm and pitch independently, with unconventional programming via an algorithmic system with four independent 'pulses' on each track. This allows for the creation of complex evolving polyrhythms.
Pitches are assigned through a global shared 'note list', which can be reversed or randomized globally. A song mode was added post-launch, allowing arrangement of patterns through an algorithmic cue system for structured performance and composition.
The sound engines per track include five main types: classic subtractive synthesis, FM, additive, granular, and physical modeling synthesis. Additionally, there is a quad engine comprising four configurable slots that can load mini sound engines specialized in drum synthesis and stereo sample playback from a large onboard memory (26GB).
Each track and the master bus have up to four effects slots with a comprehensive range of effects: compression, reverb, delay, EQ, filter, drive, and tape emulation. Modulation within the PolyPulse is highly flexible, featuring a per-voice modulation system that can assign multiple sources – including multi-waveform LFOs, AD envelopes, a 16-step sequencer, and randomizers – to nearly any parameter in the sound engines, effects, or even to other modulators.
The PolyPulse's interface also includes 32 encoders, 13 pots, and 65 keyboard-style buttons, with 25 of them making up a two-octave keyboard. This offers potential for creative sound design and has more hands-on control than usual.
The PolyPulse is equipped for connectivity to incorporate it into a wider setup. It has a stereo headphone output, four audio inputs, eight audio outputs, 5-pin DIN MIDI in/out and trigger in/out, and an Ethernet port for updating firmware and uploading samples.
With its unique take on sequencing and arrangement, the PolyPulse's price of £1769/$2099 could open up a whole new world of performative possibilities. For more information about the instrument, visit the PolyPulse's website.
