BreachForums Founder Conor Fitzpatrick Sentenced to 3 Years in Prison
Conor Fitzpatrick, the founder and lead administrator of BreachForums, has been sentenced to three years in prison. This comes after the Supreme Court reopened his case on September 15, 2024, vacating a previous controversial decision.
Fitzpatrick, initially arrested in 2023, admitted to being 'pompompurin', the leading administrator of BreachForums. The forum facilitated access to sensitive personal information of millions of U.S. citizens, including data from the FBI and Washington, D.C.'s healthcare marketplace. It held over 14 billion individual records and had over 300,000 members who bought and sold stolen information from thousands of companies.
Prosecutors recommended a 15-year sentence, stating that Fitzpatrick's crimes were severe and he demonstrated little remorse. They also argued that his autism spectrum disorder diagnosis was mild and that he could cope in a prison setting. However, Fitzpatrick's lawyers argued that a prison sentence would serve no interest of society and place him in danger due to his alleged suicide attempts.
Fitzpatrick's role involved rallying hackers to the forum and serving as a middleman between cybercriminals. He personally profited from selling stolen information, including private personal information and commercial data. The new three-year sentence aims to address the seriousness of his crimes while considering his mental health.
