BMW's Plant Steyr Begins Producing Electric Engines for Neue Klasse
BMW Group Plant Steyr has started producing electric motors for the Neue Klasse series. The plant, crucial to the Neue Klasse's development, will keep producing diesel and petrol motors for job security while expanding its electric motor capabilities.
The Gen6 electric motor, now in mass production, offers improvements such as reduced energy loss, costs, and weight, enhancing vehicle efficiency by 20%. All key components, including rotors, stators, transmissions, and inverters, are manufactured and assembled in-house at Steyr.
Milan Nedeljković, a BMW AG board member, highlighted Plant Steyr's role in the Neue Klasse and the global production network's development. Klaus von Moltke, SVP of Motor Production and Steyr's plant director, expressed pride in delivering the electric motor after three years since its announcement. The BMW Group is investing over one billion euros in Steyr's e-drive development and production by 2030, with around 1,000 employees working in the new electric motor assembly.
The electric motor will be distributed throughout the production network for the Neue Klasse series. This shift marks a significant step towards BMW's electric future, with Steyr at the heart of this transition. The plant's continued production of diesel and petrol motors ensures technology openness and long-term job security.
