Blog Updates from Microsoft 365 Insider

Microsoft has recently unveiled two new functions for Excel: TRANSLATE and DETECTLANGUAGE. These functions are part of the dynamic array formulas and the new text functions that made their debut in Excel in 2020, particularly within Microsoft 365.

The rollout of these functions, TRANSLATE and DETECTLANGUAGE, has been gradual, with Microsoft releasing them via various updates. The official announcement of these functions occurred in 2020 when Microsoft introduced the new dynamic array formulas and language functions in Excel.

Here's a brief overview of the functions:

  • TRANSLATE: This function translates text from one language to another using Microsoft Translation Services.
  • DETECTLANGUAGE: This function detects the language of the provided text and returns the language code using Microsoft Translation Services.

These functions leverage Microsoft's AI technology to enable efficient and precise translations. They can be found in the Text group of formulas in Excel and can be used for processing text data in various languages.

Currently, the TRANSLATE function supports over 100 languages. However, it's important to note that these functions are preview functions and may change before being broadly released.

The availability of these functions extends to Excel for Windows, Excel for Mac, and the web. For those interested, more information about the Microsoft 365 Insider program and the Microsoft 365 Insider newsletter can be found.

While these functions are available to Beta Channel users, it's not recommended to use them in important workbooks until they are generally available. Features are released over time to ensure everything works smoothly.

For feedback or to share new ideas, you can click on Help > Feedback in Excel. To view the list of supported languages for the TRANSLATE function, a link is provided within the article.
