Biometric purchasing of train tickets becomes available for Khabarovsk residents from September 1st
Changes are afoot in the Russian rail transportation sector, with the introduction of biometric systems for customer identification in dining car services set to take effect from September 1, 2025.
According to reports by the "Khabarovsk Krai Today" news agency and RIA Novosti, the use of biometrics in dining car services is expected to streamline the process of ticket purchase and boarding for long-distance train travel in Russia.
The Unified Biometric System (UBS) and the Unified System of Identification and Authentication (ESIA) are two such biometric systems that may be adopted by carriers with the necessary technical capability. The UBS and ESIA will be used for passenger identification in Russian rail transportation.
The changes in the rules for providing services in rail transportation in Russia, including the possible use of biometrics in dining car services, are part of a broader overhaul of the railway business. DB Fernverkehr AG, a key player in the sector, has updated their passenger transportation conditions (Beförderungsbedingungen) from Frankfurt am Main, reflecting these changes.
Starting from September 1, 2025, long-distance train travel in Russia will allow ticket purchase and boarding using biometrics. This development is expected to make the process of travelling by train more efficient and convenient for passengers.
While the news about the new possibility to book long-distance trains in Russia using biometrics was not found in the provided results, it is anticipated that this feature will be introduced as part of the overall changes in the rail transportation rules.
As always, the implementation of these changes will depend on the technical capabilities of the carriers and their readiness to adapt to the new systems. Nonetheless, the introduction of biometric systems for customer identification in dining car services is a significant step towards modernising Russian long-distance train travel.
