Berlin's A104 Bridge at Breitenbachplatz to Be Demolished by 2024 for Sustainable Redesign

The A104 bridge at Breitenbachplatz in Berlin-Dahlem is set to be demolished by 2024, as it's beyond repair. This demolition will pave the way for a significant redesign of the area, with the winning design of the Schinkel Competition 2023 focusing on sustainability and adaptability to current issues.

The Schinkel Competition 2023 received over 100 entries, with 13 designs being awarded. Among these, one proposal stands out: converting the existing autobahn tunnels into a wastewater treatment plant and transforming the A104 roadway into a biodiversity-rich biotope. The future of the Schlangenbader Straße tunnel remains uncertain, with options including keeping it open for traffic or closing it for redevelopment.

The Patzschke office plans to transform Breitenbachplatz into a pedestrian-friendly and green urban space. This redesign aims to improve accessibility and integrate new public spaces once the A104 highway is demolished. The Architects' and Engineers' Association of Berlin-Brandenburg initiated this redesign through the Schinkel Competition 2023.

All awarded works of the Schinkel Competition 2023 will be exhibited at the University of the Arts in Berlin from March 13 to 26, 2023. The demolition of the A104 bridge at Breitenbachplatz by 2024 will allow for innovative and sustainable redesigns, with the winning design focusing on the area's sustainable use and adaptability to current issues.
