Battery Warning on Electric Vehicles During Testing: No Anxiety Over Stranding Due to Depleted Power Sources

The automobile club ADAC recently conducted a test of six current electric vehicles from Germany, Korea, Sweden, China, and the USA to determine their performance and safety features. The test results were revealing, highlighting the emergency reserves that these vehicles offer even at zero percent battery.

None of the test candidates broke down at zero percent battery, a reassuring finding for electric vehicle owners. However, the test results did not provide specific information about the impact of winter conditions on the usable emergency reserve of older batteries.

Regardless of their origin, the tested electric vehicles have an energy buffer when the on-board computer shows zero percent charge. The batteries still offered an emergency reserve of 15 to 20 kilometers, but with less power. It is advised against pushing the range in electric vehicles, especially with older batteries and in winter conditions.

The warning stages in several electric vehicles include visual, auditory, and throttled drive power. The timing of the first warning varies among vehicles, ranging from 21% to 7% charge.

In the test, all electric vehicles played out a "warning drama" as the power reserve dwindled. The highest ADAC ratings in the test were achieved by the Audi Q6 e-tron performance from Germany, which received an overall very good grade of 1.6, corresponding to a maximum 5-star ECOtest rating and excellent performance in comfort, safety, and environmental categories.

If an electric vehicle runs out of charge, a mobile charging option or roadside assistance is needed. Stranded electric vehicles should not be rolled, as the motor generates voltage that can damage the vehicle's electronics. The automobile club ADAC advises against rolling stranded electric vehicles due to potential damage to the vehicle's electronics.

In conclusion, electric vehicles in current models provide early and effective warnings when the remaining range is low, as confirmed by ADAC. The test results showed that electric vehicles have an emergency reserve even at zero battery, albeit with less power. It is essential for electric vehicle owners to be aware of these features and to take necessary precautions, especially during winter conditions and with older batteries.
