Battery Expert Celina Mikolajczak Kicks Off University of Nevada's Energy Solutions Forum
The University of Nevada's Energy Solutions Forum kicked off its fourth season with an insightful talk on battery technology by Celina Mikolajczak. The forum, supported by Mick Hitchcock, aims to gather experts like Mikolajczak to discuss climate change solutions.
Mikolajczak, a battery expert, has worked with leading producers such as Tesla, Uber, and Panasonic Energy. She began her career in failure analysis of lithium-ion batteries, a time when they were primarily used in laptops. Mikolajczak's expertise led her to Tesla, where she helped prevent battery fires and later worked with NASA to ensure the safety of lithium-ion batteries on the International Space Station.
Initially, the recyclability of batteries was not a major focus during design. The strategy was to address it later. However, the rate of change in energy density of lithium-ion batteries has been steady, averaging about 4% per year. Mikolajczak's talk highlighted the importance of considering the entire lifecycle of batteries, including recycling.
The Energy Solutions Forum continues with Kirk Sorensen, president and chief technologist at Flibe Energy, set to speak on Oct. 1. Known for his work on thorium-based nuclear energy, Sorensen will bring another perspective to the forum's mission of collaboration on climate change solutions.
