Barclays Bank Appoints Shaygan Kheradpir as First Group Technology Executive

Barclays Bank has made a significant move by appointing Shaygan Kheradpir as its first group technology executive, with a key role in driving the bank's transformation strategy. Kheradpir, currently the chief operating officer for the retail and business banking division, will take on the additional responsibilities as the chief operations and technology officer.

The appointment reflects the significance of technology for Barclays' transformation strategy, unveiled last week. Improvements in the efficiency and effectiveness of operations, facilitated in part by technological innovation and automation, have been identified as a key priority by the bank.

Kheradpir will sit on the bank's executive committee and report directly to CEO Anthony Jenkins. His new role will see him overseeing technology innovations, including Barclays' mobile money transfer app, PingIt.

Before joining Barclays in December 2010, Kheradpir was the CIO and CTO of mobile telecommunications provider Verizon. At Verizon, he spearheaded the transformation of the company's IT systems, shifting them towards more agile, scalable, and cloud-based infrastructure. He focused on improving customer experience through digital channels and accelerating the rollout of new technologies.

Prior to his tenure at Verizon, Kheradpir served as CIO and COO at Juniper Networks, where he was key in enhancing the company’s network technology offerings and operational capabilities. He supported rapid product development and deployment, contributing to the company's growth.

At Pitney Bowes, Kheradpir led initiatives to improve the company’s digital capabilities and operational efficiency by integrating advanced IT solutions and driving innovation in traditional business processes.

Throughout his career, Kheradpir has been recognized for his ability to leverage emerging technologies such as cloud computing, big data analytics, and digital platforms to transform traditional business models, fostering agility and customer-centric innovations. His expertise includes implementing large-scale IT transformations that align technology strategy with business goals.

The appointment of Kheradpir comes after the previous chief operating officer, Jerry del Missier, stepped down in July 2012 in the wake of the LIBOR fixing scandal. Kheradpir's role will be crucial in facilitating the improvements in the efficiency and effectiveness of operations, as identified in the strategic review unveiled last month by Barclays Bank.

Barclays has already demonstrated its commitment to technological innovation and automation. In Portugal, the bank has introduced iPads in branches, which is claimed to have cut the time required to set up a new customer account from 90 minutes to 30.

As Barclays continues to evolve and adapt, Kheradpir's leadership in modernizing and digitizing the bank’s operations, enhancing its technological infrastructure, and enabling new digital services for customers will undoubtedly play a significant role in the bank's future success.

  1. Shaygan Kheradpir's role as the first group technology executive at Barclays Bank signifies the bank's emphasis on technology, which is a key aspect of their transformation strategy.
  2. As the chief operations and technology officer, Kheradpir will be instrumental in driving technological innovations such as Barclays' mobile money transfer app, PingIt, and improving the bank's efficiency and effectiveness through digital channels and technological advancements.
