AWS US-East Outage: Data Loss for Some Customers After 3-Day Downtime
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has confirmed a significant outage in its US-East region, affecting customers hosted in the North Virginia data centre. The incident, triggered by a 'networking event' on Thursday morning, lasted for three days, causing increased latency and errors in both EC2 and Elastic Beanstalk services.
Amazon worked tirelessly to recover lost instances, successfully restoring the 'vast majority' by Sunday. However, a small percentage (0.07%) of data volumes were irretrievably lost. The customers affected by this data loss are not explicitly named, but a similar large-scale data issue in the past involved millions of customers of luxury brands Gucci, Balenciaga, and Alexander McQueen. It's important to note that this recent incident is unrelated to the previous data breach.
The root causes of the outage are currently under investigation by Amazon. The company has not yet provided a detailed report on the 'ama' (incident).
The AWS outage, lasting three days, has impacted a significant number of customers. While Amazon has successfully recovered most instances, a small amount of 'a' (data loss) is inevitable. The company is actively investigating the cause of the outage to prevent future occurrences.
