Astronaut Walter Villadei Evaluates AxEMU Space Suit Functionality Using Lunar Geology Apparatus

In a significant step towards the Artemis III mission, astronaut Walter Villadei recently participated in a speedtest of the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) at an undisclosed location. The test, a collaborative effort between Axiom Space and the Italian government, marked a milestone in understanding lunar exploration and our shared future in space.

During the test, Villadei used the Tool Boggan, a sled-like platform for organizing and mounting tools with tethers, to evaluate the usage of various tools during the Artemis III mission. The tools tested included a sample bag dispenser, sample bags, a scoop, a hammer, an easel, and a Don Doff Frame (DDF) in the Human Landing System Airlock.

The primary objectives of the test were to assess the ergonomics of the tools, lunar sample collection procedures, and the overall readiness of the suit for lunar geology tasks. The test provided valuable feedback on the suit's performance, particularly in terms of dexterity, range of motion, comfort, and functionality of the gloves when handling lunar tools. Villadei conducted a series of movements to assess the AxEMU's advanced flexibility and mobility.

The collaboration between Axiom Space and the Italian government, formalised through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed in 2022, aims to expand global access to space and grow a robust economy in low-Earth orbit. This partnership underscores the importance of global collaboration in advancing space exploration.

Italian Air Force and the Italian government supported Villadei's mission, underscoring their commitment to space exploration. Villadei's participation in the test also highlights his role as the pilot representing Italy in Axiom Mission 3 (Ax-3).

The test was crucial in assessing the suit's performance and its potential role in supporting human presence in space and the future of commercial space infrastructure. This step towards understanding our planet and our shared future is a testament to the strides being made in space exploration.
