Assessment of Ansonia Schoolhouse Clock - Part I
In April of 2016, a remarkable find was made not far from where the owner resides - an antique Ansonia octagonal short drop clock, commonly known as a schoolhouse clock. This treasure, referred to as the Ansonia Schoolhouse, dates back to 1895, making it over a century old.
The clock, with its distinctive octagonal shape, has not been serviced since its acquisition and has remained in its original condition. Despite this, it has not been marred by poor repairs, preserving its historical charm.
Upon closer inspection, the clock shows signs of wear that are common in antique mechanical clocks, especially those of the Ansonia brand. There is serious lateral movement in some pivot holes, and the T3 bushing on the front plate has created an oblong hole. These issues are likely to affect the clock's mechanical movement.
The next step in the clock's journey is cleaning its movement. Six bushings are required for this clock, and once cleaned and properly lubricated, they will help to reduce the wear and improve the clock's accuracy.
The time-only movements of the Ansonia Schoolhouse are simple to work on, making it an ideal candidate for restoration. As the clock continues its ordinary life, it will undergo further servicing to repair or replace worn gears and pivots, and to address any issues with the suspension spring, dial, and case.
While the exact year of the clock's manufacturing is not known, it is estimated to be around the turn of the 20th century. This beautiful piece of history now takes its place in the owner's collection, adding a touch of vintage charm to any wall it graces.
As with many antique mechanical clocks, the Ansonia Schoolhouse will require some degree of restoration to function optimally. Servicing will involve cleaning, proper lubrication, bushing worn pivot holes, repairing or replacing the suspension spring, and careful cosmetic restoration of the dial and case if necessary.
Despite the challenges that come with restoring such a historical piece, the reward is a clock that continues to tick accurately and beautifully, a testament to the craftsmanship of the past. The Ansonia Schoolhouse, now restored, continues its journey through time, a reminder of a bygone era.
