ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has made significant strides in artificial intelligence (AI) development with the creation of GR-3, a large-scale vision-language-action (VLA) model. This model, which can be considered the brain of the robot, allows robots to understand and execute complex tasks based on natural language commands [1][2][4].

The advancement was demonstrated through ByteMini, ByteDance’s bimanual mobile robot equipped with GR-3. The robot is capable of performing practical tasks such as folding clothes, hanging shirts on hangers, and cleaning tables [1][2][3][4].

Remarkably, ByteMini was able to handle tasks it wasn't specifically trained for, such as picking up household items of different sizes and placing them in designated spots. Moreover, it was able to handle short-sleeved clothes despite training only on long-sleeved ones, showcasing its generalization ability [1][2][3][4].

The development of this technology has taken place in China, where ByteDance has been at the forefront of AI research. The technology includes DeepSeek and Manus, and the company's Seed department has been responsible for AI research and large language model (LLM) development [5].

The development of robotics is seen as the next phase of AI by chip designer Nvidia [6]. The ongoing advancements in this field could potentially lead to automated home assistance and flexible robotic applications.

The statement by US commerce secretary Howard Lutnick comes amidst ongoing threats to TikTok's presence in the US. Lutnick reiterated that TikTok may face a ban in the US unless the company sells its American assets. If this doesn't happen, Lutnick stated that TikTok "is going to go dark" and decisions are coming soon [7].

Lutnick also indicated that Americans will own the technology and control the algorithm if TikTok is not sold [8]. This could potentially lead to further advancements in AI and robotics within the US.
