Arena at Avicii undergoes $92 million upgrade, featuring cutting-edge sound technology
In the heart of Stockholm, the Avicii Arena has undergone a remarkable transformation, becoming Europe's largest spherical venue and a beacon for sound innovation. The $92 million redesign, led by Danish firm Stouenborg, has introduced key advancements in sound and production, elevating the arena to a new standard.
At the core of these innovations is a cutting-edge sound system, developed in collaboration with Meyer Sound. The system incorporates the active acoustic technologies of Constellation and Spacemap Go, which dynamically capture and move sound to create an intimate, crystal-clear audio experience for every seat in the large venue.
These systems precisely control and move sound in real time, ensuring an unparalleled listening experience. The spatial audio allows fans to relive the electric magic as though standing front and center.
The retractable acoustic ceiling, a large steel structure, is another significant addition. It can be lowered to optimize acoustics for smaller, intimate shows or raised to accommodate large-scale events, while also serving as a flexible rigging point for lighting, sound, and special effects. This ceiling is designed to fine-tune reverberation and enhance rigging capabilities.
The Avicii Arena's sound quality has improved significantly, going from one of the worst in Northern Europe to arguably the best. This precision design allows the venue to host a wide variety of events with tailored acoustics and flexible production setups.
The transformation is a tribute to Tim Bergling, the Swedish icon known globally as Avicii. The Tomorrowland 2025 edition featured a memorial for Avicii called "Avicii Forever: The Tribute", an installation that showcased never-before-seen photos and audiovisual storytelling. Festivalgoers were invited to reflect on Avicii's life amid tomorrow's energy.
As a final touch, Avicii's Mainstage sets from 2012, 2014, and 2015 are now available in spatial audio. These sets can be enjoyed via the Tomorrowland app and Apple Music, allowing fans to immerse themselves in the magic of Avicii's performances once more.
