Amazon Web Services (AWS) has entered into a contract with ASD (Assured Security Directorate) for top-secret cloud services.

In a significant move, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has secured an agreement with the Australian Government to deliver a top-secret cloud platform. This partnership is expected to drive innovation and job creation in cybersecurity, data analytics, and cloud computing, as part of a larger AUD15-20 billion investment to enhance defence's cyber capabilities over the next decade.

The cloud platform, designed and built by Australian businesses, will be a critical enabling capability for the Australian Defence Force's military operations. It will securely host sensitive information and improve Australia's ability to share and analyze classified data at speed and scale.

AWS has a longstanding presence in Australia and specialist expertise in delivering classified cloud services. The company plans to invest AUD13.2 billion in Australian infrastructure to 2027, marking the largest tech investment in Australia's history. This investment is in addition to the $9.1 billion AWS has invested in Australian infrastructure since its launch in 2011.

The cloud will provide opportunities to harness leading technologies, including artificial intelligence and machine learning. It will also bolster the resilience of defence's communications networks and support greater interoperability and deeper collaboration with the United States.

Davy Levy, Vice President of AWS Asia Pacific and Japan, stated that AWS is excited to partner with the Australian Government to provide innovative, efficient, and effective cloud services for national defence enhancement. The partnership aims to enable the Australian Government and its defence and intelligence agencies to securely share information, speed up innovation, and achieve their missions faster.

The Australian Government has agreed to spend at least AUD2 billion over the next ten years to enhance cyber capabilities. This investment is in addition to the AUD8.5-11 billion to 2033-34 to bolster defence's enterprise data and ICT, as announced in the 2024 Integrated Investment Program.

The cloud platform will be a sovereign cloud in Australia for the government's information, communication, and technology services. However, the specific Australian companies commissioned by Amazon Web Services for the development and construction of the new top-secret cloud for the Australian government have not been publicly disclosed. The location and involved parties remain confidential for security reasons.

This investment is part of a larger strategy by the Australian Government to implement the 2024 National Defence Strategy. The joint initiative offers significant opportunities for Australia's defence industry, with the defence industry set to benefit from new opportunities to deliver and integrate new capabilities using these cloud services.

In conclusion, the partnership between AWS and the Australian Government marks a significant step forward in enhancing Australia's national defence capabilities. The investment in a top-secret cloud platform is expected to drive innovation, create jobs, and secure Australia's sensitive information for years to come.
