Amazon Debuts a Colored Version of Kindle for the First Time in its History
Amazon Introduces Colorful Reading Experience with Kindle Colorsoft
In a significant move, Amazon has expanded its Kindle lineup with three new additions: the Kindle Scribe, an updated Paperwhite Kindle, and a new entry-level Kindle, alongside the introduction of the Kindle Colorsoft.
The Kindle Colorsoft, priced at $280, boasts a 7-inch E Ink Kaleido 3 color e-paper display, supporting over 4,096 colors. With a sharp monochrome resolution of 1264×1680 pixels at 300 PPI and a color resolution of 150 PPI, the device delivers vivid, paper-like color.
Underneath the vibrant exterior, the Kindle Colorsoft runs on a dual-core 2GHz MediaTek processor with 1GB RAM and comes with 16GB internal storage in the base model. Enhanced color reproduction is achieved via custom display coatings, while an oxide backplane ensures better contrast and image quality.
The Kindle Colorsoft is designed to cater to the reading of image-heavy content like comics, magazines, and webtoons, without compromising on sharp black-and-white text. Compared to previous models, the 2025 edition improves color vibrancy, font richness, and display contrast, and resolves prior issues like the yellow-light band effect.
Other notable features include an auto-adjusting front light to aid reading in various lighting conditions, wireless charging on the Signature Edition (32GB model priced at $279), a lighter build using increased recycled materials, and Amazon’s emphasis on color cover art and user interface elements for an enhanced shopping and reading experience.
For those seeking a more affordable alternative, the base 16GB Colorsoft model is available, broadening its reach to markets including the US, UK, Canada, and Australia as of mid-2025.
Amazon has also introduced a Kids edition, complete with child-friendly covers, parental controls, Amazon Kids+ subscription, and learning features like the OpenDyslexic font.
Meanwhile, the updated Paperwhite Kindle, now 7 inches in size but remaining the slimmest Kindle on the market, boasts an impressive three-month battery life. The Kindle Scribe, priced at $339.99, comes with a Premium Pen for note-taking, offering a pencil-like experience.
