Getting to the Bottom of the Midea U Smart Air Conditioner Recall
On a disappointing note, approximately 1.7 million Midea U and U+ Smart air conditioners are being pulled from the market by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission due to a design oversight causing water to pool within the device, which could in turn breed mold. Out of the 152 reports received, 17 involved individuals experiencing unpleasant symptoms typically associated with mold exposure.
Purchased between March 2020 and May 2025, the affected smart air conditioners were sold under multiple brand names, including Midea, Comfort Aire, Frigidaire, Danby, and Insignia. Models include 8,000, 10,000, and 12,000 BTU units that were stocked at retailers such as Costco, Midea, Best Buy, Home Depot, Amazon, Lowe's, BJ's, and Menard's. A complete list of the affected models can be found on the CPSC's website.
If you own a recall-affected model, Midea is offering both repairs and refunds based on your purchase date. To obtain a refund, Midea will provide you with a shipping label, and you'll handle returning the unit to them. Alternatively, for a repair, Midea will dispatch a technician to your residence.
