ABB Sells Robotics Business to SoftBank for $5.4 Billion
ABB, the Swiss-Swedish technology group, is selling its robotics business to the SoftBank Group for $5.4 billion. The deal, expected to close in mid to late 2026, involves ABB's Robotics & Factory Automation division, which employed around 7,000 people and generated sales of $2.3 billion in 2024, accounting for around 7% of ABB's total Group sales.
Sami Atiya, the current Head of Robotics & Factory Automation, will leave ABB to support the carve-out process as a strategic advisor. The original plan to spin off the robotics business as an independently listed company has been abandoned. ABB anticipates a non-operating pre-tax book gain of around $2.4 billion and cash proceeds of around $5.3 billion after transaction costs.
