A new tokenized credit fund, named Apollo, is introduced to unite the realms of cryptocurrency and traditional Wall Street finance.

Apollo Global Management has made a significant stride in the world of finance by introducing the Securitize Tokenized Apollo Diversified Credit Fund (ACRED). This digital extension of its private credit business aims to modernize and streamline investment ownership, while leveraging the benefits of decentralized finance (DeFi) for enhanced returns.

Modernizing Investment Ownership

ACRED provides investors with digital tokens, recorded on blockchain infrastructure, that replace traditional paper statements. This modernization simplifies investment ownership and increases accessibility, as investors can securely store their tokens in personal crypto wallets.

Enhanced Transparency and Security

The blockchain infrastructure underpinning ACRED offers enhanced transparency and secure recording of ownership. This could potentially reduce fraud and operational errors, making the investment process more reliable.

Expanded Investor Base

By tokenizing the fund, Apollo opens up its private credit strategies to crypto-native investors who prefer digital assets. This broadens the capital pool and expands the investor base.

Leverage and Amplified Returns

ACRED's innovative DeFi strategy allows investors to mint derivative tokens (sACRED) that can be used as collateral to borrow stablecoins on DeFi platforms. This creates a leverage loop, increasing exposure and potentially boosting returns by reinvesting borrowed funds back into the ACRED fund.

New Risks Introduced

While ACRED offers promising benefits, it also introduces new financial, technical, and regulatory risks. These include rising stablecoin borrowing costs, software bugs and technical vulnerabilities, liquidity gaps and market risk, valuation and pricing challenges, and regulatory uncertainty.

Gauntlet has been tasked with offering real-time risk monitoring to mitigate these challenges. Coinbase Asset Management has been identified among the early participants in ACRED.

Minimum Investment and Fees

ACRED imposes a minimum investment threshold of $50,000 and charges a management fee of 2%. Redemption in ACRED is limited to once per quarter, with Apollo committing to repurchase a minimum of 5% of shares each cycle.

The Future of DeFi and Traditional Finance

The transformation in DeFi is evident, with a shift towards financial products rooted in real-world assets like corporate credit. Industry figures suggest growing interest from macro hedge funds, family offices, and early traditional finance participants in on-chain financial instruments.

DeFi's composability allows for strategies not feasible in traditional finance, potentially attracting investors during less favorable interest rate environments. Investors can earn interest from the loans themselves and potentially additional returns through DeFi strategies using sACRED.

Apollo executives believe that blockchain will ultimately become the preferred infrastructure for fund operations due to its efficiency and adaptability. Some DeFi innovators anticipate a larger movement of traditional funds into blockchain systems, marking a significant shift in the financial landscape.

Drift, a project operating on the Solana blockchain, is preparing to offer sACRED to select users. As the adoption of blockchain technology in traditional finance continues to grow, ACRED serves as a pioneering example of this convergence.
