80s Resurgence: Philips Jumps on the Retro Bandwagon
Philips Celebrates 100 Years with a Retro-Inspired Product Line: The Moving Sound Range
In a nod to the past and a leap towards the future, Philips is commemorating its centennial anniversary with the launch of the Moving Sound range. This new product line, inspired by 80s-era tape players, is a testament to the enduring appeal of nostalgia and the influence of the decade's fashion trend that has extended beyond the fashion world, now making waves in the world of consumer tech.
The Moving Sound range is a vibrant and retro-styled collection designed to evoke memories of a bygone era. Among the products in this line are The Tube, a portable Bluetooth speaker, and The Roller, a modern portable Bluetooth speaker. Both products boast a yellow finish reminiscent of neon boomboxes, harking back to the iconic design of the original cassette players.
The Tube, set to be released in mid-2026, features a built-in color display for control, which functions as an animated cassette tape and a light show, adding a touch of nostalgia to its modern functionality. It boasts two 5-inch woofers and a pair of 1.5-inch tweeters for audio output, with side-firing passive radiators for big bass. The Tube supports the latest Bluetooth standard and includes integrated Auracast for multi-speaker setups, or music can be played via a USB connection.
The Roller, also known as the MS50, is a modern take on the original 'The Roller' cassette player. It supports the latest Bluetooth standard and includes integrated Auracast for multi-speaker setups, just like The Tube. It also has a built-in color display for control and presents an animated cassette tape as a reference to its roots. The Roller has a Philips Entertainment app as a control method and a built-in carry handle for portability.
The Moving Sound range also includes The Buds, or the MS5, a pair of wireless retro-style headphones. The Buds feature Spatial Audio and active noise-cancelling ANC, with a quoted battery life of 48 hours (without ANC). The Buds charging case features the cassette animation on an external display.
Rounding out the Moving Sound range is The Bingo, also known as the MS1. These wireless retro-style headphones feature a pink insert for the earcups and a yellow finish, adding a pop of colour to the collection.
While the exact sales launch date and availability for the entire Philips Moving Sound product line, including the MS80 and other models, are not yet confirmed, one thing is certain: Philips is celebrating its 100th anniversary in style, blending the past with the present to create a unique and exciting product line.
